Written by Frankie Gaye this is a really close insight into Marvin's life, absolutely brilliant and so many un disclosed facts like for instance did you know that for quite some time Frankie used to go on stage pretending to be Marvin, when all the screaming and cheering died down he used to say "thank you, I'd now like to introduce you to my brother Marvin"

For Marvin Fans a   " MUST READ "

Thanks Eric for the much appreciated present

Well at one time there wasn't a price guide on the market, now there's two !

The question is which one do you buy?

The first one is John Manship's  guide. This is the one that is mainly responsible for the "bargains" we used to get from the states disappearing. As soon as he brought his 1st edition out in 2001 all the American dealers put their prices up to match..

Secondly we have Tim Brown and Martin Koppel, who are Anglo American records and two of the biggest collectors on the scene. Anything Tim Brown hasn't got isn't worth having.

It's the hardest job in the world to price records, and I think both books should not be read as gospel truth, some prices are way up, and some are too low. Some vary that much between books it makes a mockery of the whole thing   eg

Bobby Garrett      I can't get away    Mirwood       MANSHIP  £100        BROWN    £30 (I'll have one for £30 please Tim)

Eddie Garrigan    I wish I was            Fontana           MANSHIP    £150      BROWN    £250

Ruby Winters         Better                      Diamond         MANSHIP     £100     BROWN    £40    (I'll have one for £40 please John)

Then again they agree on

Baby Washington    Leave me alone        Sue          MANSHIP    £75        BROWN            £75

I reckon you'd be lucky to get £ 35

So basically make your own mind up, I think they are both worth having even if it's to look up labels.

Manship's USA Price Guide £25 from   www.raresoulman.co.uk

Tim Brown's Guide £29.99 from  www.raresoulvinly.co.uk

EDDY'S COMMENTS

I bought this book at Cleethorpes, that night I went home at around 3.30am cos I was knackered, I picked the book up, which was a mistake as I sat there for another hour reading it, just couldn't put it down.

There are thousands of facts, about thousands of records. If you are a record collector you will need this book.

Apart from the records listings, (and there is  EVERBODY in there, and I mean EVERYBODY), there are articles and biographies, highlights of some of Dave's favourite records, label scans, group line ups, and a years venue report written in his own unique style.

like I said earlier, it's a must if you collect records.

'An excellent read, this isn't just a book about Barrow anybody who is into Northern Soul needs to get their hands on this book'

Richard Searling Jazz FM 100.4

There are more and more books about the Northern Soul scene on the market, some good, some bad, but here is one that I would definitely recommend.

Rob McKeever has been on the scene since the start, and used to get records from his brother in the States which Ian Levine (amongst others) used to play at Blackpool Mecca.

Rob is a Barrowvian born and bred and this book is about the soul scene in Barrow in Furness, and details the clubs and many characters over the past 30 odd years, from the start at The Duke of Edinbugh Hotel in the mid sixties, right up to the present day clubs of Vickers Sports and Social Club and The Abbey House Hotel.

Fascinating read, with many great contributions from other Barrowvians, and visitors to Barrow.

The best, easiest and cheapest way to get a copy is to Email Rob at

ROB McKEEVER

and he will send you details

TOO DARN SOULFUL  ..........   The Story of Northern Soul...David Nowell

In the 332 pages (plus pictures) David Nowell takes the first ever in-depth look at the culture, the music, the DJs, the artists and the people who frequent and have frequented the all-night venues which are synonymous with the peculiarly British all-night soul scene.

I have just read it and absolutely loved it, We are taken back to the start of the Northern soul scene, right up to the present.

What I liked about it so much was the way it was mixed with 'the punters' view, hard facts, and Dave's views as well.

You can get it from:- Robson Books, Unit 10, Blenheim Court, Brewery Road, London. N7 9NT

Mike Ritson and Stuart Russell have put together the definitive book about Northern Soul

If your last experience of a Northern Soul book was 'Nightshift' and you still have a nasty taste in your mouth, The In Crowd will act like a peppermint gargle and get rid of it.

Mike Ritson (one of the authors) & John Enright (Be Cool publishing) with Barbara Lynn and myself

The the first 60 odd pages cover the mod scene in England and the start of the English Soul labels of Stateside, Soul City and of course The Tamla Motown era...it's great

The book then covers The Twisted Wheel , The Torch & Mecca. There are some great photos and record labels.

I've got to laugh at some of the pictures of kids outside the Mecca & Wheel. On the Strange World of Northern Soul videos, all those old buggers tell us how cool they all looked. Bloody Hell, you've got to be joking. Thank the lord I didn't look as bad!!! N.B. must hide the photos of me with long hair!

If you want a signed copy please phone 020 8543 4252

In paperback it is £29.95

P & P £5 England or £10 rest of the World
